Always with a cheerful disposition, Mr Wong Theam Yew is one of the Security Officers who greets and smiles to people who passes by the office building in his current work location. Turning 55 this year does not stop Mr Wong from learning. Previously a crane operator for 30 years, he decided to make a career switch as the industry was not doing well. “I knew that I have to move on and learn some new skills,” shared Mr Wong.

With the introduction of SkillsFuture Credit, he decided to embark on his learning journey. Many of his friends asked, “Why choose security and not something that you are familiar with?” He will always smile and reply, “It’s an upcoming industry and I want to be part of it.” Mr Wong took up the basic security courses with NTUC LearningHub and managed to secure his current job as a Security Officer thereafter. Currently, he is also taking up the advanced level courses to upgrade his skills so that he could progress in his career.

Mr Wong also took up LHUB’s service excellence courses to improve on his interpersonal skills. “I’m grateful to attend the training courses from NTUC LearningHub. The trainers were patient and shared many useful insights with us. To make learning easier, they used real-life examples so that we can relate and remember them better. The sales consultant was also able to recommend courses that suit my needs and I really enjoyed my training at LHUB,” shared Mr Wong.

When asked about his future learning plans, Mr Wong revealed that he will consider taking up the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) courses as he did not have a chance during his younger days. “It’s for personal interest and I will definitely pursue that if I have the chance to. I will continue learning and equip myself with the relevant skills so that I can apply them at work and in my personal life.”
