How to Scale The Career Ladder With SkillsFuture Courses

1. Work out where you currently are

When you use a map, the first thing that you do is work out where you currently are. Following from that, you work out where you want to go, and then finally, how you will get there. Although we naturally do this when using maps, we tend to start with the last step (the how) when it comes to our career. The irony of this is that personal development and career planning should be no different. To figure out how to get to where you want to be in your career, you must first work out where you stand at the workplace. You can begin by asking yourself questions like:
  • What are my strengths that I wish to cultivate?
  • What weaknesses are hindering me in my current line of work?

2. Identify where you want to go

The next step is to work out where you want to go. What does scaling the ladder mean to you at this present moment? Does it mean getting a pay rise? Does it mean getting a promotion in terms of role and responsibility? If your goal is to get a pay rise, then what knowledge and skills will you need to showcase to warrant that? If your goal is to get a promotion, then an organisational chart can help you to chart a roadmap for career progression. For example, in the advertising industry, an organisational chart will show that an account executive will generally be promoted to an account manager, then to a senior account manager and finally to an account director. Identify the next step up in the hierarchy that you are moving towards and its job description (if you don’t have access to one inside your organisation, head to job boards like Jobstreet or JobsDB and look at the postings). Once you have this, identify the required skills and knowledge that you do not currently possess.

3. Find SkillsFuture courses that will help you get there

Now that you have done the background work, it is time to find the resources that will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to help you achieve your career goals.
