Lifelong Learner: Mr Lee Fook Cheong

At the age of 65, Mr Lee Fook Cheong is in his second career – a Security Officer. He takes pride in his work and enjoys it every day. What keeps Fook Cheong going?

Fook Cheong was an Operations Manager for his family’s Transportation Company previously. Being in the family business for 48 years, he was managing the day-to-day operations which includes fleet management and scheduling of the buses.

“I didn’t think of upgrading my skills before I retired about 2 years ago. I used to be busy every day, but there was nothing much I could do after I retired. It was rather boring at home and I wanted to spend my time fruitfully,” shared Fook Cheong. He decided to explore if there are any part-time jobs which he could possibly go into.

Fook Cheong got to know of NTUC LearningHub (LHUB) through the road shows it organises monthly and shared what he went through with the sales consultants. After assessing his interests, he was recommended to take up Security courses, where he could possibly be a Security Officer upon completing the courses. He decided to give it a try and signed up for the WSQ Basic Licensing Unit course.

“Learning at my age was not easy, as I was out of school for many years and had lost touch in learning. I was lucky as LHUB has a pool of dedicated and patient trainers, who shared their experiences and explained the concepts to us very clearly,” said Fook Cheong.

He puts in extra effort during the course and passed the course eventually. To have more knowledge in the Security industry, he also took up the WSQ Handle Counter-Terrorism Activities and WSQ Conduct Security Screening of Person and Bag subsequently.

Fook Cheong is currently into his job for close to a year and he is looking at taking up more courses to upgrade himself. “My time is well-spent at work and learning. Learning doesn’t end here for me as it keeps me going. Have a positive mindset to learn and you can succeed at any age,” added Fook Cheong with a wide smile on his face.
