Course Overview

How would you like to have staff who not only performs well, is motivated and fits into the team? It starts with hiring the right person and this requires effective interviewing and selection skills from the interviewer. Hiring a misfit can be very expensive and detrimental to the organization. Instead of using gut feeling, a competency and behavioural-based approach can minimize the risk of hiring the wrong person.

In the course, participants learn how to design behavioural-based question, listening effectively to draw out information and select candidates with the right fit for the job.

In this one-day course, participants will be able to :

  • Assess the fit and selection criteria of candidates
  • Understand the principles, reasons and benefits of competency and behavioural-based interviews
  • Formulate competency and behavioural-based questions
  • Conduct competency and behavioural-based interviews in a structured process
  • Apply different types of questions for interviews and probing skills
  • Listen effectively for STAR answers
  • Consider different methods to assess candidates
  • Apply structured interview process
  • Understand use of social media platform like LinkedIn for attracting job applications

Hardware & Software
This course will be conducted as a Virtual Live Class (VLC) via Zoom platform. Participants must own a zoom account and have a laptop or a desktop with “Zoom Client for Meetings” installed. This can be downloaded from

  • Operating system: Windows 10 or MacOS (64 bit or above)
  • Processor/CPU: 1.8 GHz, 2-core Intel Core i3 or higher >
  • Minimum 20 GB hard disk space.
  • Minimum 8 Gb RAM
  • Webcam (The camera must be turned on for the duration of the class)>
  • Microphone
  • Internet Connection: Wired or Wireless broadband
  • Latest version of Zoom software to be installed on computer or laptop prior to the class.

Good to Have:

  • Wired internet connection
    Wired internet will provide you with stable and reliable connection.
  • Dual monitors
    Using a dual monitor setup will undoubtedly improve your training experience, enabling you to simultaneously participate in hands-on exercises and maintain engagement with your instructor.

Not Recommended:

Using tablets is not recommended due to their smaller screen size, which could cause eye strain and discomfort over the course of the program's duration.

  • What competencies are and benefits of using them for interviews
  • Types of interview questions, especially behavioural-based questions
  • Alignment of job description, competencies and interview questions for coherence, effectiveness and professionalism
  • Effective listening and probing skills to get the most out of interviews
  • Use of various methods to increase validity in assessment of candidates
  • Interview process from opening to closing
  • Guidelines for conducting virtual interviews
  • Recognise and overcome types of unconscious biases
  • Apply professional and TAFEP employment practices at interviews
  • Professional practices in LinkedIn platform to attract job applicants
