Course Outline

1. Explore the intended outcomes of purposeful, focused communications

The intended outcome of purposeful conversation typically falls into one of these
three broad categories: Change, Alignment, or Comprehension. Learning to use
these in the appropriate time and situation enables effective communication.

Here are examples of each:

  • Change communication: We need to take action on this.
  • Alignment communication: We need to be on the same page.
  • Comprehension communication: I want to make sure you understand this topic.

2. Understand the uses for tell-directed vs ask-directed communications

The interesting thing about all sentences is that they end with one of three punctuation marks a period, an exclamation point or a question mark. This defines for us the two methods of communicating telling and asking. We need to understand some of the basics of both styles of communication to effectively reach our team.

Here are examples of each:

  • Tell-directed communication: Making declarations, offering opinions, extending offers, and making promises
  • Ask-directed communication: Encourage thinking and problem solving

3. Identify the barriers to effective listening

There are three primary barriers to effective listening: Distractions, Misinterpretations, and Frame of Reference. In this workshop, we will discuss each barrier and how to overcome them. Ultimately, this allows us to learn the qualities of
a great listener.

  • There are two types of Distractions: Internal (in our minds) and External
(our environment) – In Misinterpretation, we have to consider that there are two aspects of communicating:  Fluency (are we using the same words?) and Interpretation (are we assigning the same meaning to the message?)
  • Each of us has a unique perspective on life and this is our frame of reference. Its a combination of our DNA, Experiences and Values

4. Learn and Apply the Reflective Listening Model

The Reflective Listening Model is a 3-step model designed to help us achieve the intended outcomes mentioned earlier (Change, Alignment, and Comprehension). When you apply this model in conversations with employees and peers, you take the focus off solving problems and focus on listening. The outcome is that you build and sustain credibility with the people you lead. The three steps in this model (1) Absorbing the message (2) Filtering it (3) Reecting it back to the sender to ensure you received it correctly. The art of communication is a discipline that has to be nurtured. This day workshop will enable you to effectively communicate with your team and gain influence to grow your business.
