Mr Collin Mah joined NTUC LearningHub (LHUB) two years ago and is currently a trainer for our security courses. Trained in self-defence and security, Mr Collin Mah was a police instructor for the past 18 years. Being an instructor gave him the opportunity to teach different agencies and interact with different types of people.

said, “I always thought to myself – since I am ACTA trained and have the experiences and knowledge, why not share them with other learners?”

HIS TEACHING MOTTO

Having a friendly and approachable personality brought Collin closer to his learners. He would share the latest happenings and guide his learners to do the right things during the lessons so that they are able to apply them correctly in their jobs. Role plays are part of the curriculum and during those sessions, Collin would give learners a scenario for them to practise and see how they react in different situations. This helps to reinforce the concepts taught, and make learning easier for learners.

One of his learners, Mr Wong, remembered his teachings vividly. “Mr Mah was very friendly to us. He shared his experiences, and even encouraged us to form study groups within the class for better learning. After attending his class, I feel motivated to move on to other modules.”

Another learner, Ms Yin also shared “Mr Mah is a passionate trainer. His classes are never boring, and he always engages us during the lessons. He is also willing to go the extra mile to help us, explain to us the concepts which we do not understand through the use of simple and relevant real-life examples. This helps us greatly in our learning, as we are able to relate and apply what we learned to our job.”

LEARNERS LEARN FROM ME; BUT WE LEARN FROM EACH OTHER

Collin recalled, “I remembered teaching a very senior learner at 75 years old when he attended my class. Despite being the senior learner of the class, he was very motivated towards learning.” This inspires and motivates Collin to go on and impart what he knows to his learners. “Learning is not a one-way traffic. We learn from our learners too, through the things they shared and also their experiences. This also helps to broaden my horizons and see things in different perspectives. I hope to carry on this journey and inspire more people to join the security industry,” Collin shared with a broad smile.
