Featured Trainer – Ms Bernice Lim

This month, we will be sharing the story of Ms Bernice Lim, who has been with NTUC LearningHub (LHUB) for close to 10 years. She is currently our trainer for the Service Excellence, Leadership and Workplace Skills courses.

EVERYDAY IS NOT A WORKING DAY FOR HER

Bernice talks with enthusiasm when we interviewed her. “To me, teaching is not just a job. It is my passion to teach. I enjoy each and every day at work, and I don’t feel like I’m working at all.” From what we understand, Bernice will always think of innovative ways to impart knowledge to her learners.

“The concepts can be rather technical and difficult for learners to remember. Hence, I will always use various examples that are applicable to the learners’ area of work. In addition, I will use visual aids such as drawings and illustrations to relate certain concepts to my learners.” said Bernice.

One of her learners, Ms Dorothy also shared, “She is indeed a patient and engaging trainer. Some of the concepts can be rather challenging for us to master within the short time frame. Ms Lim will ensure that we participate actively in class through answering, presenting and sharing on the things that we learned. I wasn’t comfortable to speak up during the class earlier, and Ms Lim motivated me to participate actively in class. This benefited me greatly as I was able to remember and reinforce what were taught earlier during the class.”

CREATING A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE

Another reason which keeps Bernice going is seeing her learners transforming into a different person after the course. Some of her learners come with no knowledge nor interest in the topics initially. After attending her classes, they are keen to speak up and had a better understanding of the topics. This really makes her happy and keeps her going.

Bernice added, “I like to facilitate the training, let my learners explore and learn from mistakes, rather than just providing them with the answers to all their questions. Seeing them being more confident and grow after the class really makes my day as I created a difference in my learners’ lives.”

MORE ON MS LIM

Bernice has vast experiences working in various organisations and statutory boards, holding different job roles in Human Resources and Training, as well as Customer Service Operations. During her free time, she likes to do handicrafts, terrarium and balloon sculpturing. These open up her thinking and at times, she will develop new ways of teaching and use them in her next class.

“I meet with different people every day. Learning comes from various forms, and I learn from my learners too. There are many ways to learn from each other, and I want to always value-add to my learners by creating innovative bite-sized content to capture their interest at all times,” shared Bernice with a broad smile.
