Course Overview
As the impact of climate change rise up agendas of governments and major businesses, the role of financial markets has grown. In light of the world’s collective agreement to limit our global greenhouse gas emissions, channeling credit and investment flows to mitigate the growing climate risks has made the finance markets a key force for change. This development has given rise to more stakeholders leveraging on the role of finance to direct capital in order to strengthen awareness, action and more positive impact on climate action.
This course seeks to explore climate risk as a strategic business risk interwoven into financial and non-financial markets. The course explores the growing focus on decarbonization across sectors, mechanisms behind carbon management – both voluntary and compliance – as well as the growing regulatory landscape across the region. We will also cover the rise of green taxonomies and understand how they can be applied. Through compliance and incentive schemes, we will discuss how non-financial markets are able leverage on opportunities to move the needle towards achieving a global net zero ambition.

Course Objectives
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to grasp a firm understanding of the following:
- Understand climate science, referencing global frameworks such as the UNFCCC
- Learn about climate risks, its impacts on various financial and non-financial industries, and the essentials in climate risk reporting (TCFD)
- Get acquainted with developments in the carbon markets – both voluntary and compliance – and the role of key actors across the ecosystem
- Understand Singapore’s sustainability ambitions in relation to GHG emissions reduction and Net Zero, and the key policies and tax mechanisms that will impact financial and non-financial sectors
- Understand the purpose of a green taxonomy, in the context of sustainable finance among various jurisdictions in Asia, including Singapore, China, and ASEAN and the EU
- Learn the key features of taxonomies, and how they can be applied across different sectors

The admission requirements are:
- Relevant diploma or degree.
- Proficient in the English language.

Course Outline
Day 1: Basics of climate science, significant milestones in global climate action, and the momentum from private and public sector institutions towards mainstreaming climate risks and the relevant frameworks. We will also explore the role of the finance markets in directing capital flows towards environment and social investments.
Day 2: Development of the carbon market, the role of taxonomies and key initiatives directed at climate finance. We will also explore case studies of Asia’s banks, and the implications for the non-financial markets.

- Upon meeting the attendance and assessment(s) criteria, participants will be awarded with a digital Statement of Attainment (SOA), accredited by SkillsFuture Singapore.
- Upon meeting the attendance and assessment(s) criteria, participants will be awarded with a digital Certificate of Completion from NTUC LearningHub and Eco-Business.
