- Be able to listen and speak in English at ESS Level 5
- Be able to read and write in English at ESS Level 5
- Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level at ESS Level 5
Course Outline
At the end of this course, learners shall be competent to perform the following Performance Criteria:
Competency Element 1: Prepare for Security Operations
PC 1.1: Obtain and review assignment instructions to identify relevant client and organisational requirements. Assignment instructions may include the followings:
- instructions from appropriate persons client, operations manager / executive
- work tasks, objectives and schedules
- resource and equipment requirements
- reporting and documentation requirements
- organisational policies and procedures applicable to the conduct of security operations
Relevant information may include the followings:
- security operational plans
- personnel schedules
- communication and reporting channels
- operations manuals
- organisational operating procedures and policies
PC 1.2: Identify operating environment and any relevant equipment or resource requirements. Operating environment may relate to the following issues:
- nature of operations
- situational issues
- environmental issues
- stakeholders, such as management, building owners, public
- scale of operations
PC 1.3: Check security equipment and requirements for operational effectiveness in accordance with manufacturers specifications and organisational requirements. Security technology and equipment may include the following equipment:
- communication equipment (such as two-way radio, pager, telephone, mobile telephone)
- security equipment (such as CCTV, video cameras, fire alarm, burglary system)
PC 1.4: Conduct daily briefing, roll call and deployment duties for security officers under direct supervision.
PC 1.5: Conduct daily checks on attire and punctuality of security officers in accordance with organisational procedures and standards.
PC 1.6: Communicate with security officers on events, news updates, and instructions passed down from head office or management such as the following:
- educate security officers on customer service
PC 1.7: Review manpower deployment plan and deploy manpower in accordance with requirements stipulated in the manpower deployment plan.
Competency Element 2: Monitor Security Operations
PC 2.1: Monitor security officers work performance and operational readiness to ensure adherence to client and organisational requirements, which may include the followings:
- radio communication checks and verification
- random spot checks
- observations from CCTV
PC 2.2: Monitor operational plan against security operations and adjust as required to maintain and/or improve efficiency and effectiveness of security operations.
PC 2.3: Promptly identify factors affecting the achievement of assignment, and recommended variation to operational plans are negotiated with and approved by appropriate person(s).
Factors may include the followings:
- competing work demands
- technology / equipment breakdowns
- unforeseen incidents
- workplace hazards, risks and controls
- environmental factors (time, weather)
- resource and materials availability
PC 2.4: Supervise and monitor security officers discipline, welfare and work performance that includes the followings:
- provide counselling, if necessary
- refer difficult cases to appropriate person
PC 2.5: Identify requests made by appropriate person and promptly provide assistance which may involve the followings:
- providing back-up support
- explaining / clarifying
- problem solving
- providing feedback to another team member
- undertaking extra tasks as necessary
PC 2.6: Record all relevant operational information in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with organisational procedures.
Competency Element 3: Review Security Operations
PC 3.1: Review and evaluate security operations regularly which may include the followings:
- review against specifications and other documentation within organisational procedures and client requirements
- competency assessment for recording purposes
PC 3.2: Conduct regular briefings and debriefings of all security officers to ensure effective exchange of information, including the followings:
- prepare handing over duties to next shift
- ensure deployment for day is completed
- brief the next shift supervisor
PC 3.3: Provide incident observations, if any and relevant information constructively and identify opportunities for improvement. Opportunities for improvement may include the followings:
- on-the-job instruction
- training, coaching and mentoring
- structured feedback
- performance appraisals
- operational effectiveness assessment
- gaps in operational coverage as determined in internal auditing or assessment processes
PC 3.4: Review security operations and forward written findings and recommendations to appropriate person.
PC 3.5: Complete and process all relevant workplace documentation in accordance with legislative and organisational procedures. Documentation may include the followings:
- written information
- reports / reports of incidents
- radio / telephone records
- shift reference files
- daily / weekly reports
- logs, journal and / or activity reports
- field notes and security notebooks
Certificate Obtained and Conferred by
- Statement of Attainment (SOA) from SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) will be issued for each module graded competent. SOA reflected as SEC-SOP-3008-1.1 Manpower Planning.
- Certificate of completion from NTUC LearningHub
Upon meeting at least 75% attendance and passing the assessment(s), participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from NTUC LearningHub.
