Opening Doors to Opportunities with NTUC LearningHub

Stories 11 Jul 2022

Izwan Bin Ab Rahman has found his calling as a safety officer, where he ensures the safety of his peers through adherence of work procedures and ensuring any hazards are eliminated at work. But did you know his journey to be a Safety Officer is one that requires hard work, a little luck and plenty of training?

It started in 2008, where Izwan had just completed his National Service. Unsure about which sector he wanted to enter, he quickly took on an opportunity to be a visual merchandiser with a supermarket chain. However, he started to find himself feeling stagnant in his role and decided to keep a lookout for greater opportunities.

In 2015, he met some friends who were working in the construction sector. They shared with him about the high demand for trained safety personnel in construction sites and encouraged him to sign up for the Advanced Certificate in Workplace Safety and Health Course with NTUC LearningHub.

Without hesitation, he enrolled himself into the full-time course. Despite having to juggle both work and studies at the same time, Izwan was still motivated to discharge his duties faithfully and aiming to do well in the course. His efforts did not go to waste; he passed the course in November the same year and was eventually offered a role as a Safety Coordinator with a telecommunications company in January 2016.

As to why he chose to train with NTUC LearningHub, Izwan said “My friends recommended me to attend courses with NTUC LearningHub as the courses and certification are recognised in the industry. They also said that the quality of courses at NTUC LearningHub is excellent, as the trainers are competent and knowledgeable in their own domain. The curriculum is rigorous and ensures the competency of trainees who have completed the course, which is assuring for employers.”
With the relevant skills Izwan acquired that led him to a role with good prospects, it dawned upon him that upskilling is key to opening more doors of opportunities. Without hesitation, he further pursued other qualifications and certifications, such as a diploma and Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) qualifications with the local polytechnics.

Currently, Izwan is preparing to pursue a specialist diploma with another institution. On his reason to upskill, he said that upskilling enables him to be confident in his work, such as chairing a meeting with the senior management to update them about work matters, or to help resolve any on site workplace and safety issues.

“I assumed that my NITEC Certificate was the only education level I could achieve. But with the help of NTUC LearningHub, I was able to open doors of opportunities for myself. I did well for the Advanced Certificate in Workplace Safety and Health Course, and eventually found myself able to go for other qualifications and courses to continue upgrading myself, which translates to providing a better future and quality of life for myself and loved ones,” quips Izwan.
